  • This edition of Release Notes describes the Release 396 family of NVIDIA Quadro, NVSTM, Tesla, and Quadro Notebook Drivers for Microsoft Windows 7 and later. NVIDIA provides these notes to describe performance improvements and bug fixes in each documented version of the driver.

    Existing Support
    This release supports the following APIs:
    - Open Computing Language (OpenCLTM software) 1.2 for NVIDIA Kepler™ and later GPUs
    - OpenGL 4.6
    - Vulkan 1.1
    - DirectX 11
    - DirectX 12 (Windows 10)
    - NVIDIA CUDA 9.1
    This driver installs nView Desktop Manager version 148.92.

    What’s New in Release 396
    Quadro New Feature Driver
    Release 396 is a Quadro New Feature (QNF) driver. This driver is from the most recent driver release branch from NVIDIA, and contains the latest new features and functionality. It has been tested for workstation environments, and is recommended only for those users who need specific features mentioned in the release highlights or release notes. For the most stable and fully supported enterprise driver please use the 'Quadro ODE Graphics Driver' downloadable from the main NVIDIA Driver download page.

    New Features
    NVIDIA RTXTM Technology: Developer preview for NVIDIA RTX ray tracing technology for DirectX 12. NVIDIA RTX supports the Microsoft DirectX Raytracing (DXR) API on NVIDIA Volta GPUs. In order to get started with developing DirectX Raytracing applications accelerated by RTX, you'll need the following:
    - NVIDIA Volta GPU
    - NVIDIA driver version 396 or higher
    - Windows 10 RS4
    - Microsoft's DXR developer package, consisting of DXR-enabled D3D runtimes, HLSL compiler, and headers Vulkan 1.1: This driver release provides full support for the new Vulkan 1.1 API and passes the Vulkan Conformance Test Suite (CTS) version 1.1.0.3.

    Limitations Under Windows 10
    Cross-adapter Clone Mode: Under Windows 10, clone mode across graphics processors is handled by the Windows OS, and not by the NVIDIA driver. Consequently, there are no controls for cross-adapter clone mode in the NVIDIA Control Panel under Windows 10. Functionality of some display controls in the NVIDIA Control Panel may be affected if cross-adapter clone mode is enabled through the Windows Control Panel. In this case, use the Windows Control Panel to adjust display settings.
    Optimus Systems: Because cross-adapter clone mode is handled by the Windows 10 OS, there are no display controls in the NVIDIA Control Panel if no display is connected to the NVIDIA GPU.

    Discontinued and Unsupported Features
    Discontinued Support in this Release
    - 32-bit Operating Systems: Beginning with Release 396, NVIDIA is no longer releasing drivers for 32-bit operating systems for any GPU architecture.
    - NVS 310/315: Beginning with Release 396, the NVIDIA driver no longer supports the following NVS
    products NVS 310 and NVS 315
    - Quad-Buffered Stereo: Beginning with Release 396, the NVIDIA Professional Drivers for Windows no longer supports select quad-buffered stereo features. See the NVIDIA Knowledge Base Article for details.

    - Set custom timings
    - Control video image settings
    - Change your HDTV format
    - Control special workstation features such as Frame Synchronization.

    Note: The NVIDIA Control Panel can be viewed with a desktop DPI scaling set to a maximum of 250%. Setting the DPI higher than 250% may result in some content getting cut off from view.

    New Features
    NVIDIA RTXTM Technology: Developer preview for NVIDIA RTX ray tracing technology for DirectX 12. NVIDIA RTX supports the Microsoft DirectX Raytracing (DXR) API on NVIDIA Volta GPUs. In order to get started with developing DirectX Raytracing applications accelerated by RTX, you'll need the following:

    - Windows 10 RS4

    Vulkan 1.1: This driver release provides full support for the new Vulkan 1.1 API and passes the Vulkan Conformance Test Suite (CTS) version 1.1.0.3.
    HD Audio: This driver adds new sample rates 32 kHz, 88.2 kHz, and 176.4 kHz to the HDMI device for all GPUs.
    Display Driver Standalone Installer: The standalone display driver installer now removes extracted files after installing the driver, leaving a smaller footprint on the hard drive.
    Display Driver Libraries: Added new libraries (nvdlist.dll and nvdlistx.dll) to support Optimus and MSHybrid notebooks.
    NVDECODE API: Added a new API that lets the client reconfigure the decoder resolution and other post processing parameters (such as the display resolution, cropping rectangle, and aspect ratio of the decoded frame) without having to destroy and recreate the decoder instance. This API is useful in scenarios where the decoder instance initialization time takes up a significant portion of the overall decode execution time; for example, in back-to-back decoding of multiple short clips of different resolutions. The new API will be included in Video Codec SDK 8.2, which is expected to release in late Q2 2018.

    - NVIDIA Fermi GPUs: Beginning with Release 396, the NVIDIA Game Ready driver no longer supports NVIDIA GPUs based on the Fermi architecture.
